. . .
I shut my eyes and saw them. Three black, blurry forms lurking above me to my right. Like three cane-shaped leeches, the tallest one in the middle. I opened my eyes. Was it the wine? I closed my eyes again. The Shadows still hovered, black, against the night. How were they visible in the night? Dear God. I was afraid. Afraid. Of what, I didnât know. Just afraid.
. . .
After a night of waking and dozing, with fragments of forgotten dreams, a muffled tapping came at the door. âCome in,â I called softly.
âReady for coffee?â Phil peeked in.
I jiggled the cobwebs out of my head. âYes, just a few minutes.â
Ten minutes later I met him in the entry, and we tiptoed out the door.
As we rode to the café, Phil slowed down at a corner. âIâd like to leave for Milton early, hon. I know we planned to stay three nights, but I have a lot of preparation for summer session, and Iâd like an earlier start.â
âThatâs okay.â I felt instant relief, then suspicion. âIs that the only reason?â
He drove slowly up a hilly street lined with trees. âLook, letâs be honest. I sense youâre not enjoying yourself, and I donât want you toââ
âPhil, to tell the truth, your mother doesnât like meââ
âNow wait a minuteââ He stopped in front of a small café with âLornaâsâ written across the front window.
âItâs okay. I understand why sheâd rather have you with someone whoâwhoââ I tried to stifle the catch in my throat. Damn, my eyes welled up.
âCome here, honey.â He reached for me across the seat and drew me close. âMy mother has problems. Kind of like delusions of grandeur. I donât know why, because Dad isnât like that at all. So if you can see it as her flaw and not take it personally.â He paused. âBecause no one could be a better person than you, honey. And I want you to remember that.â
We sat silently for a minute. âThatâs good to hear. You mustâve told her Iâm Catholic since she didnât ask me about my religion.â
Phil cleared his throat. âYes, she knows. Itâs important to their generation, but not to me or Carole either.â
I shuddered. âMy folks wouldâve been horrified if Maureen had married a Protestant.â
âMaybe theyâll change their minds about me,â Phil said.
I rubbed his arm. âIâm ready for coffee.â
